A porch is more than just an entryway – it’s a crucial part of your property’s identity. First impressions are key in home improvement, and a well-designed porch can effectively establish a property’s charm and raise its kerb appeal. On the contrary, a tired and outdated porch can cause more harm than good, detracting from the entire look and function of your home.
For one Bristol homeowner, their existing porch was not just visually lacking, but also suffered from poor lighting, an awkward layout, and an outdated design that no longer suited modern living. What followed was a complete transformation, handled by the team at CR Windows, turning this small but important space into a beautiful, functional, and welcoming entrance.
In this case study, we’ll walk through the entire project – from the original problems to the final reveal – showcasing how design, materials, and craftsmanship came together to breathe new life into a family home.
Although the original porch provided shelter and a basic transition into the home, it had several persistent issues:
The porch didn’t let in enough natural light. The solid UPVC panels and tinted windows, although beneficial for privacy, made it feel gloomy, especially in winter.
The entrance door was located off to the side, accessible only by walking along the edge of the front garden. This not only disrupted the natural flow of the property but also created a visually unbalanced appearance.
With tall UPVC panels and an old roof, the porch looked more like an afterthought rather than a cohesive extension of the home.
The existing roof showed clear signs of wear. It lacked modern insulation, causing heat loss. The homeowner sought a more efficient, durable, and attractive solution.
The homeowner’s brief was clear: they wanted a brighter, more welcoming entrance that improved both form and function. They also wanted the porch to feel like a natural extension of the house, rather than a disconnected add-on.
Our expert team developed a plan that would:
CR Windows approached the redesign with a balance of aesthetics and practicality.
One of the most impactful changes was repositioning the entrance door to a more central, front-facing position. This would immediately improve the flow from porch to home whilst giving the space a balanced, symmetrical look from the street.
The UPVC base was replaced with a dwarf brick wall, blending into the home’s original brickwork while adding thermal mass for insulation.
New double-glazed windows were installed on either side of the door. These included decorative glass and fitted blinds, which allowed for both privacy and increased daylight.
The porch roof was replaced with a pitched, tiled roof that visually tied in with the home and gave the semi-detached home a more distinct identity. This upgrade also provided vastly improved thermal performance.
Transforming the old porch into this new design required careful execution. Here’s how it unfolded:
The team carefully removed the UPVC panels and roof, revealing the original porch base allowing for a full structural assessment.
New foundations were laid, followed by the construction of the dwarf brick wall. The choice of brick was critical, matching the home’s exterior to create a seamless visual transition.
Once the structural framework was complete, the new composite front door was installed in its central position. Side panels with double glazing were added to flood the space with natural light. All fittings were installed with precision to ensure airtight seals and crisp finishing.
A sturdy frame supported the new tiled pitched roof, fully insulated and built to modern standards. Light brown tiles provided a modern, clean aesthetic.
Guttering, downpipes, trims, and internal finishes completed the project. Every detail was executed with care to ensure a long-lasting result.
The impact of the transformation is immediately visible:
The porch now looks like it belongs to the house, boosting the home’s exterior charm and first impressions.
Thanks to modern insulation, energy-efficient windows, and a secure composite door, the porch now acts as a thermal buffer zone, reducing heat loss and improving year-round comfort.
With better lighting, improved layout, and easy access, the porch now supports the rhythm of daily life – whether greeting visitors, taking off muddy shoes, or simply enjoying a brighter welcome home.
This case study shows how even small spaces like porches can have a big impact. Through thoughtful design and expert execution, CR Windows turned a dated, underperforming entryway into a stunning and functional feature of the home.
In addition to porches, CR Windows also specialise in tiled roof conservatories – offering the same blend of style, energy efficiency, and craftsmanship for larger living spaces.
