Arched Doorway Replacement in Bristol: A Modern Take on a Classic Feature

A Familiar Challenge in a Period Home

Bristol is home to a variety of traditional properties, many of which feature charming, characterful details like arched brickwork around windows and doorways. Tracing back to Roman times and most recently being popularised in the late 19th century, arched doorways add to the appeal of a home, but they can also pose a challenge when the time comes for upgrades.

This was exactly the case for a recent customer of CR Windows. Their Victorian property in Bristol had a front entrance framed by an original arched brick opening, a feature which the customer loved. However, the door itself no longer matched the rest of the home.

The original doorway, dated in appearance and limited in function.

The existing door was a deep rosewood colour with a solid, traditional timber design that had aged over time and no longer reflected the standard of the rest of the property. Along with this, the decorative glass panels let in little light, leaving their hallway feeling darker than desired. The homeowners had decided it was time for an upgrade.

What the Homeowners Wanted

The brief was straightforward, but with some important considerations:

  • Keep the arched shape of the doorway to stay in keeping with the original design
  • Replace the door with something more modern and energy-efficient
  • Allow more natural light into the hallway
  • Improve the overall appearance of the property from the outside

They also wanted to work with a local company that had experience with non-standard installations. Arched doors require a different level of planning and fitting expertise than square or rectangular designs, and as one of the only arched doorway specialists in the area, we were well-suited to the job.

The Planning and Design Process

The project began with a site visit to discuss the project in detail and carry out precise measurements. From there, the design options were presented, with particular attention given to:

  • The door colour and finish needed to complement the home’s period aesthetic
  • Glazing designs that could provide light while maintaining privacy
  • Frame material and profile, ensuring a clean finish within the arch

Given the shape of the space, the frame and glazing would need to be made to order. This level of customisation is a key part of our tailored service, especially for period homes.

The Five-Day Installation Timeline

The entire project was completed over the course of five days:

Day 1 – Removal and Assessment

The existing door and frame were removed. This step was taken carefully and required precision to avoid damaging the surrounding brick arch. The opening was cleaned and prepped for installation.

Day 2 – Frame Installation

The new white UPVC arched frame, manufactured to exact dimensions, was delivered and fitted into place. The frame was double-checked for a tight, level fit.

Day 3 – Door and Glazing Fitted

The client’s choice, a green composite door, was installed along with the glazed top and side panels. These panels allowed light in without compromising privacy and featured a decorative pattern to complement the traditional Victorian brickwork.

Day 4 – Sealing and Finishing

All joints were sealed to improve thermal efficiency and ensure weather resistance. Final trim work was completed.

Day 5 – Final Checks and Customer Handover

A full inspection was carried out. The customer was walked through the finished installation, and operating instructions for the locking system were provided.

The Result

The new front entrance gave the property a cleaner, more welcoming appearance, while the interior benefited from increased natural light. The new green door colour provided a subtle but distinctive update, while the white frame and decorative glazing complemented the home’s original brick features.

Why Arched Installations Require a Different Approach

Installing a new door into an arched opening is more complex than a standard doorway replacement. The measurements must be exact, and the frame often needs to be tailored to match the shape of the brickwork.

CR Windows approaches these installations with a focus on:

  • Precision measurements taken on-site
  • Template creation for curved sections
  • Made-to-measure fabrication of uPVC frames and composite door panels
  • Experienced fitters who understand the structural and aesthetic considerations of period homes

In this project, the white arched frame was manufactured specifically for the property, ensuring it followed the exact lines of the existing brickwork without gaps or visible adjustments.
